Mikey Astbury
Industry sponsored BBSRC PhD Candidate - McCormick Lab, University of Edinburgh
Mikey is 2nd year PhD student in the McCormick lab, funded by EastBio and co-sponsored by CyanoCapture. Mikey obtained his BA in Natural Sciences (Plant Sciences) at the University of Cambridge. Fascinated by the potential of cyanobacteria in biotechnology, his work focuses on developing the fast-growing marine strain Synechococcus sp. PCC11901 for use in carbon capture and as a platform to produce high value compounds. Mikey is working on the 18-month Innovate UK-funded Engineering Biology project where the McCormick lab and CyanoCapture are collaborating to build robust genetic engineering toolkits for markerless cloning in fast-growing cyanobacteria.
